Wanted: Writers & Stewards
Your union wants you to become involved in your Local 1040. If your niche is in writing, and would like to become involved in writing articles for the local Newsletter.... If you could spare sometime to post flyers in break rooms in your terminal, we need your involvement....We are growing our stewardship! If your interest is in being a part of the backbone of your union, then Shop Steward is just for you. We are currently recruiting for new stewards to be trained in assisting members with responding to leave restrictions, AWOLS, LOCs, LORs, and requesting VLTPs and/or FMLAs.
If you are interested in assisting in any of these areas, or any other area of your union. Please send an email to info@afgelocal1040.org
AFGE Local 1040 (District 10) in Dallas, Texas (DAL) recently fought the removal of a LTSO who had been unjustly proposed for termination on the basis of alleged misconduct performed by him while off duty. In a meeting with the airport's TSA Assistant Federal Security Director, Jeffrey Tyler, who recently transferred from DFW International Airport, AFGE presented strong evidence to support their argument that the punishment was too harsh considering his overall above average performance & conduct on the job.
AFGE Helps "DAL" LTSO Keep His Job!!
Membership = Power
Encourage ALL your fellow officers to join and support the union. STRONG MEMBERSHIP says a lot when our negotiation team sits down at the table with the TSA management negotiation team... If OUR membership is strong, its like having ALL the members standing behind our negotiation team at the table.
WAITING TIME IS OVER! Its time for all TSO's, BDO's, and STI's to jump on the union train, JOIN and support THEIR union to ensure a strong contract.
There is no question that having a strong membership impacts everything a union does, especially contract negotiations. In fact, one of the first questions TSA Administrator John Pistole recently asked President Gage was how many employees have joined the union. When we go to the table, we must have a strong showing of members. Any management is more responsive when employees stand united as members. TSOs who don't join AFGE signal to TSA management that their workplace life is just fine and no change is needed. We know that policies like leave, shift bidding, transfers, uniform allowance and parking are in dire need of change, and the more members we have, the stronger we are and the better the contract we will get.
If you are a member, pledge to sign up a new member today. If you're not yet a member, don't wait another day to make a difference!
AFGE Announces Formation of National TSA Council
AFGE is excited to announce the formation of the National TSA Council - AFGE Council 100! TSA Local leaders and activists this week attended the founding convention of our TSA Council, solidifying the status of TSA Locals as part of AFGE - the country's largest federal employee union. The Council will serve as the organized forum for our TSA Locals to coordinate activities in the pursuit of improving the work life in TSA.
During the three-day convention, 67 delegates representing 34 AFGE TSA Locals adopted, after lengthy and detailed discussion and debate, a constitution and bylaws that establishes the structure and governance of the Council. With TSA officers spreading over 400 airports and 44 Locals and counting, it is important to have the Council structure in place to deal with TSA nationally and regionally.
The delegates also nominated six interim regional vice presidents to take a leadership role for representation, bargaining, and union building, with continued assistance and oversight from the national office and the National Executive Council - AFGE's policy making body. The six interim regional vice presidents for Council 100 are Stacy Bodtmann for Region 1; Mac Johnson for Region 2; Alan Jackimowicz for Region 3; Rene Quintero for Region 4; George Stebbins for Region 5; and Cris Soulia for Region 6. The regions conform to TSA's new regions.
Besides forming the Council and adopting the constitution and bylaws, the delegates participated in various labor-related workshops such as basics of leadership, fiduciary responsibilities, building the legislative and political program, and mapping and goal setting for membership growth.
We are proud of the new Council and look forward to working together towards a better TSA. Thank you to all who came out to the historic convention. We will continue to build on this momentum as we move forward and negotiate the best contract for you.

Administrator Pistole will visit DFW on February 2nd (this Thursday).
Two town-hall style meetings will be held. TSO and non-supervisory at 9:00am. Supervisors will meet at 10:00am. With all the issues concerning TSO's here at DFW, and across the nation, this is a great opportunity to ask your questions directly to Administrator Pistole. For more detailed information consult your daily briefing.
I encourage all Local 1040 Members to try to attend this town-hall meeting if available. If you are off, put it on your schedule to attend.
Thank you for your support.
